Wasting time on the internet this morning I can't stop looking at pictures of the Apollo 11 (1969) moon landing. It is my obsession of the moment. The photos strike me as being stunning, surreal, evocative and bizarre. I don't doubt that the moon landing really happened, but somehow I still can't quite wrap my head around it. Being the first nation to walk on the moon was stunning show of nationalistic prestige for the United States, but why? What was the point of it? Other than to demonstrate our nation's supernatural might relative to other nations, I can't think of any logical reason to want to travel to the moon. At all. It is so very strange. Perhaps it is even the weirdest thing to happen in the entire crazy 1960's decade. And it was done by our government. In fact, the space program as it was designed by president Kennedy in 1961 has been called the largest military financial expenditure performed by any country during peacetime. 25 billion dollars just to prove a point. At least they didn't kill anyone in the process.

<lj-embed id="12" />

The astronauts of Apollo 11 brought many moon rocks back to planet earth with them as souvenirs. One of the moon rocks was given to the Washington National Cathedral in Washington D.C. (website here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Cathedral). Then, as if to prove that nationalism, science, the military, and religion could all peacefully co-exist (if only in symbolism); cathedral artisans took the lunar rock and designed an entire stained glass window around it. Now the first moon landing is enshrined on the cathedral walls along with the birth of baby jesus and the gospel of John. The same cathedral also boasts the world's only sculpture of Darth Vader on a religious building (really!). I find organized religion personally distasteful, but I will always have a deep underlying appreciation for gothic cathedrals, art and architecture.

The infamous space window at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. The moon rock lies in the center of the red sphere.

This is the best thing vintage fashion-related I've seen in a very long time! Certainly the best thing 60's-fashion related. Film # 5, titled aptly "fashion is dead", in which Mr. Gernreich predicts the advent of unisex fashion and contact lenses is a must see for everyone.

Warning: Website content is not "adult" in nature, however the page is not entirely work safe due to Gernreich's infamous 1964 topless swimming suit design, depicted in all its bosom-revealing glory.

By-the-way: I posted new auctions.

My new favorite 60's celebrity fashion icon is Mariska Veres from 60's Dutch power-pop rock band Shocking Blue.

It might sound strange to say, but the cover of a vintage woman's magazine from 1960's Iran symbolizes almost everything that I believe in. The women sitting together so outwardly and openly symbolize sisterhood and female friendships. The tranquil mountain scenery in the backdrop symbolizes inner peace and harmony withe the world outside. Most importantly, their above knee skirts and jewel-colored garments symbolize social freedom and mobility. Look at their elaborately coiffed hairstyles, look at shoes, look at their legs (!) and the sun shining on their hair and smiling faces. Compared to the bleak tragedy that is the modern-day Iranian woman's dresscode, that is paradise lost.

Taken from this website.
Just a small brag about the go-go boots I have for sale in my eBay store. I'm so happy that after a long dry spell, I'm finally go-go boot happy again. I've got them in white, purple, black and red. The catch is that they're literally all a size 6-6.5. No kidding! I found two more pairs this week (not pictured-but one pair has Bond-girl-type stilleto heels and the other is black velvet with lace-up ties) and those were size 6-6.5 as well. You'd think I had gotten them all from the same person, but nope. I guess it is just my luck to find shoes that almost fit me, but not quite.

Amazing Late 60's Over-The-Knee PURPLE Buckskin Suede Go-Go Boots

60's Red Suede Vintage Corset Tie Go-Go Boots From Neiman Marcus
(I'm posting these for sale tomorrow)

Super Cute RARE early/mid 60s Center Seam White Leather Go-Go Boots

Those of you who watch my auction, take note. I just changed my Ebay ID to "village*pink*vintage". I'm already feeling a tingle of regret. Like I already miss my old user name. I knew from the start that opalblak22 was a horrible ID for a vintage seller, but I kept it this long anyways. As lame as this sounds, I had mixed feelings about changing my user ID namely because I didn't want to seem like I was trying too hard to be commercial (well, duh). I kind of miss having my actual name in real life as part of my ID. I tried to change it to "opalpink", but that ID and all its close variants (opal_pink) were already taken by other ebay users (WTF?). I can't change it again for 30 days, so I think I'm stuck with it.
